  • The wheel wobble that won't go

Hello, I have a small issue with my IS300.

Basically it's a bit of wheel wobble under braking. Not so much at speeds under say 20, but defo over that.

Now, where I'm stuck on it is that I know it isnt brake discs as all 4 have been changed (it did it before and didnt change anything) and also, tracking and balancing has been done recently as I got new tyres.

So, what else can cause wobble under braking? My thought is buckled alloy but surley then it'd be constant and not just under brake?

Any help much appreciated as it's doing my nut!! Oh and if it is likely to be wheel wobble, anyone got any nice ones for sale?

      Welcome to the club.

As said by Lexusboy, I would get your geometry checked out by WIM.

Some garages do a rubbish wheel balancing service. WIM do a very good one, and it will spot buckled alloys etc.

Having said that, could it be a slightly sticking caliper, e.g. uneven force in the braking ? Is it pulling to one side at all under braking ?

Nah, I don't think it's pulling at all, just steering wheel wobble really. I've heard of WIM but I wouldnt like to make one trip there, only to find out wheels are buckled, then have to go back again for another balance once I get a set!

To be honest I'm looking for a new set of alloys anyway. And a few more toys, stuff needs to be done to my IS300... It's the addiction that never goes away...

I wonder if its something to do with the front suspension, since when you brake you're getting a lot of weight transferred to the front of the car, and this could induce your problem ?

I wouldn't have thought that buckled/unbalanced wheels would only show when you brake. When I had wheel balancing issues I had a vibration all the time, not just under braking.

Hm, as much as I hate to think of that you could be right. I wouldn't even know roughly how expensive it'd be if it was the case either? I'll have to book it in to a garage soon I suppose .

Has your car ever been WIM'd ? i.e. the geometry set up there ?

If not then I would highly recommend it. I'm not sure that bad geometry would be causing the problems that you're describing, but even if that needs otherwise fixing, the handling of your car will be improved by using WIM's geometry settings.

If you make the trip there to do the geo, you could always get them to check the balancing of your wheels on their machine, at least if their machine says your wheels are fine then you will know that's really true (i.e. because they have decent machines and expert operators).

Is WIM far for you ?

I think steveie has hit it on the head, I'd be getting the garage to look at all your suspension joints and if it has them tension rods as they are designed to stop the wheels moving forward under breaking.

Hi sugarytea, if you get new alloys, will you sell your old ones, as mine are so badly corroded and flaking with bad kurb chunks missing, (not by me),
too far gone for refurb, hope you don't mind me asking, cheers buddy

I've never had it WIMed before no, don't think they're too far from me, London based aren't they? I live in Newbury. First things I guess I'll get it booked in to have a lewk at mentioned things. I was always going to WIM it anyway, just didn't want do to it before replacing sus/wheel/whatever.

As for selling them, I may do but mine aren't exactly tip-top either bud, certainly refurbable though. I'll give you a heads up if/when I do mate.

I personally think that the Wim will give you some idea's to what wrong and should be done before spending any further money, or you could be replacing items that dont need touching.

Order new tyres online at Blackboots Wheels in Motion and have them fitted at a our state of the art centre in Chesham or at one of our nationwide tyre fitting partners UK wide. Our online tyre shop offers huge savings and tyre discounts on all major brands.

Good luck keep us posted on your results.

Seeing as they're closeish for me you're probably right. I just really don't want it to be sus but can't be much else I guess. We'll see, might take it down this saturday if I can find the time before my planned day of drinking "suicide" cider at the annual Newbury show .

WIM are at Chesham, Buckinghamshire. Not too long a journey from Newbury, I reckon it'll be worth it, at least to sort the geo. And maybe they might spot what the problem is with the wobbling ?
